What does TFB mean?
TFB stands for "Taper Flange Beam" because the "flanges" are tapered, unlike the heavier Universal Beam which has straight or parallel flanges. TFB's are available only in two sizes: 100 x 45mm and 125 x 65mm. Back to top
What does PFC mean?
PFC stands for "Parallel Flange Channel". It's very commonly used in construction and transport fabrication. See our PFC page for a list of sizes. Back to top
What does RHS mean?
RHS stands for "Rectangular Hollow Section". Square Hollow Section is commonly called SHS by many, but it is more correctly referred to as RHS. There is a wide range of sizes listed on our RHS pages. Back to top
What does CHS mean?
CHS stands for "Circular Hollow Section". It is a broad term that covers a range of products from exhaust tubing, to heavy linepipe, to the more familiar structural grade pipe. See our pipe page for more information. Back to top
What does RSJ mean?
RSJ stands for "Rolled Steel Joist", which is an old imperial version of the modern Universal Beam (UB). The main difference, apart from the imperial/metric sizing, is that the RSJ had tapered flanges, where the UB has straight or parallel flanges. See our UB page for more detials. Back to top
How long does it take to order in special non-stock items?
The time frame for special non-stock items varies, depending on what the product is and where it has to come from. As a broad indication, we can generally get most common steel sections the next day. If they are less common they might take several days, due to transport from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.
Some products, such as colorbond roofing, fencing or purlins are produced specially for each customer's order. Some of them are produced daily, some on a weekly basis. For a more accurate estimate of lead times, it's best to contact us so that we can check it out for you. Back to top
How do pipe sizes work?
Pipe sizes can be pretty
confusing. That's because sometimes people talk about the outside
diameter (OD) while others talk about the inside diameter (ID).
To overcome this
confusion, the manufacturers introduced a sizing system which gives
each size a name
instead of a measurement. Pipes are give a "Nominal Bore" size (NB).
Here's how it works...
Every NB size gives you
only a
rough idea
of the inside measurement. It's only rough because it depends on the
wall thickness - it's the OD that stays constant.
For example, pipe that
was once called 1" is now called 25NB. This size will always have an OD
of 33.7mm, and comes in a range of different wall thicknesses (WT). If
it has a "Medium" WT (3.2mm), then the actual ID will be 33.7
- 3.2 - 3.2 = 27.3mm
Check out our pipe page for a list of available sizes. Back to top
